Heart Symbols to Copy and Paste: ♡ ❥ ღ and Every Text Heart

Here are the six people actually want, ready to copy:

These are text symbols, not emoji. That distinction is the entire point of this article, and it matters more than most people realise: a text heart takes the colour of the text around it, works in places where emoji are blocked, and does not turn your username into a cartoon.

Text hearts and emoji hearts are not the same thing

❤️ is an emoji. It is always red, it is always a picture, and every platform draws it differently. ♡ is a character, like a letter. It inherits your font, your text colour and your font size, and it looks the same wherever it goes.

That has four practical consequences:

• Text hearts work in usernames and display names on platforms that strip or reject emoji.
• They go black in dark mode and white on a dark background, because they follow the text.
• They do not render as a huge colourful blob next to small text, which is what makes emoji look wrong in a professional context.
• They can be typed into fields that only accept plain text, such as some game names, document titles and file names.

The outline and solid hearts

The two originals, and still the two most used.

♡ is U+2661, the white heart suit, and ♥ is U+2665, the black heart suit. They come from the playing card suits, which is why they sit next to ♠ ♣ ♦ in the character set and why they have been in fonts since long before emoji existed. That heritage is the reason they render so reliably: every serious font on every platform has had these characters for decades.

The outline one does more work in aesthetic contexts. It reads as light and handwritten where the solid one reads as a card suit.

Decorated and ornamental hearts

These come from the dingbat block, which was originally a set of printer's ornaments. ❥ is a rotated heavy heart bullet, ❣ is a heart exclamation mark, and ❦ and ❧ are floral hearts used historically as paragraph dividers in printed books.

❥ is the most useful of the four for modern use because it reads as decorative without reading as twee. ❦ and ❧ are genuinely beautiful and almost nobody uses them, which is a good reason to.

The Georgian letter that became a heart

ღ is not a heart. It is U+10E6, the Georgian letter Ghan, and it has been quietly borrowed by the entire internet because it happens to look like a small curled heart. Georgian speakers find this mildly amusing.

It is worth knowing because ღ renders in fonts where the dingbat hearts sometimes do not, and because it sits at a much lower code point, which makes it unusually safe in older systems and game clients. If a platform is stripping your symbols, try this one.

Small, cute and kaomoji hearts

The heart inside a text face is where ♡ earns its keep. An emoji heart cannot go inside a kaomoji, because it breaks the alignment and the scale. A text heart sits at the same size as the surrounding characters and holds the face together.

Heart borders and dividers

These are what people mean by aesthetic bio dividers. They are built from combining marks and spacing characters, which is why they sometimes look slightly different on your device than they did where you copied them. That is not you doing something wrong, it is font fallback picking different glyphs for the rarer characters.

Heart text art

For when a single character is not enough:

The variation selector trick

This is the single most useful thing in this article and almost nobody knows it.

Some heart characters exist in two presentations. ❤ (U+2764) can render as a plain black text glyph or as the red emoji, and which one you get depends on an invisible character that follows it.

• U+FE0F forces emoji presentation. ❤️ is ❤ plus U+FE0F, which is why it is red.
• U+FE0E forces text presentation. ❤︎ is ❤ plus U+FE0E, which is why it stays black.

So if you paste a heart somewhere and it turns into a red cartoon when you wanted a neat black character, the fix is to use the text presentation version. Copy these:

Using heart symbols in usernames

The rules vary by platform and they are stricter than people expect.

• Instagram accepts text hearts in the display name but not in the handle. The handle is restricted to letters, numbers, full stops and underscores.
• Discord accepts them in the display name and the server nickname. Usernames themselves were restricted to lowercase letters, numbers, full stops and underscores in the 2023 username change.
• Most games accept ♡ and ღ but reject the dingbat hearts, because their name filters allowlist specific character ranges.
• Anything with a legal name field, meaning banking, airlines and government forms, will reject all of them. Obviously.

How to type a heart without copying one

Worth setting up if you use one daily rather than once.

• Windows: hold Alt and press 3 on the numeric keypad. That gives you ♥, and it is one of the oldest shortcuts still working on the platform. For ♡ you need the hex method instead, typing 2661 followed by Alt and X inside Word.
• iPhone: add a text replacement under Settings, General, Keyboard. Map something short such as ;h to ♡ and it becomes available in every app on the device.
• Android: Gboard has a symbols layer reached through the ?123 key and then =\<, which contains ♥ but not the ornamental ones. A clipboard manager is more practical for those.
• Mac: the character viewer has a favourites section. Adding ♡ to it once saves hunting for it every time.

One more option people forget: most phones let you paste a symbol into a contact name or a note and keep it there as a permanent clipboard. Crude, and faster than anything else if you only need two or three.

Heart shaped characters from other scripts

ღ is the famous borrowed one, but it is not the only character that has been repurposed for its shape.

ᰔ is from the Lepcha script, ૮ and ა come from Gujarati and Georgian respectively, and they are used as the arms in cute text faces rather than as hearts on their own. This kind of borrowing is extremely common in kaomoji, where the shape of a character matters far more than what it actually means.

One thing to be aware of: mixing scripts in a username sometimes trips automated moderation, because a string containing characters from four different writing systems is a classic pattern for spoofing. If a name is being rejected for no obvious reason, that is usually why.

When a symbol shows as a box

A box or a question mark means the font being used does not contain that character, and your device could not find a fallback font that does. It is a rendering problem, not a copying problem, and the symbol is still correct underneath.

It happens most with the rarer combining marks in the fancy borders, and least with ♡ ♥ and ღ. Older Android builds and some game clients are the usual offenders. The full set of causes and fixes is in our piece on the empty box problem, and almost all of them come down to a pending system update.

Why designers reach for these instead of emoji

There is a practical reason text hearts survive in professional work where emoji do not, and it comes down to control.

An emoji is a bitmap or a colour vector supplied by the operating system. You cannot change its colour, you cannot change its weight, and it will not match a typeface. Put ❤️ in a logotype set in a light serif and it looks like a sticker somebody dropped on the page.

♡ is a glyph inside the font. It inherits the weight, the colour, the letter spacing and the optical size of everything around it. In a well made typeface it was drawn by the same person who drew the letters, which is why it sits correctly on the baseline instead of hovering.

That is also why a heart in a book, a menu or a wedding invitation is essentially always the text version. It is not a stylistic preference, it is the only one that typesets.

Which one should you actually use

For a bio or display name, ♡. It is the most legible at small sizes, it never turns red, and it works everywhere.

For a decorative divider, ❥ or ❦. They are distinctive enough to look deliberate.

For a restrictive username filter, ღ.

For an actual message to an actual person, use the emoji. ❤️ carries warmth in a way that ♡ does not, because a text heart reads as design and an emoji heart reads as feeling. Our complete heart emoji guide covers which colour says what.
