Thanksgiving Emojis: The Complete Copy and Paste Guide

If you send one Thanksgiving message this year, send ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฅง. Bird, season, dessert. It reads instantly and it does not assume anything about whose house you are in.

Everything below copies in one click, sorted by who you are in the day: host, guest, the person eating leftovers at 11pm, or the one who could not make it.

The dates, because they are not the same everywhere

US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, which puts it on 26 November in 2026. Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday of October, 12 October in 2026, six weeks earlier and a completely separate holiday.

This catches people out constantly in mixed friend groups. If you are messaging someone in Toronto in late November you have missed it by a month and a half, and the ๐Ÿฆƒ will land oddly.

Our upcoming festivals page counts down to whichever is next.

The classic sets

Brown is the colour that makes these work, not orange. ๐ŸคŽ reads as warm and earthy where ๐Ÿงก reads as Halloween, and the two holidays are close enough together that the distinction matters. If a set feels like it belongs in October, swap the orange heart for the brown one and it moves into November.

Host sets

For the person who has been awake since six.

๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ is the honest one here. Hosting is genuinely hard work and a set that admits it lands better with other hosts than one pretending the day is effortless. We went through the whole range of these in emoji for every feeling.

Guest sets

๐Ÿ’ belongs in this list more than it looks like it does. Turning up with something is the whole guest ritual, and a bouquet emoji in the message you send on the way is a small signal that you are not arriving empty handed.

The table

There is no stuffing emoji, no cranberry sauce, no green bean casserole and no gravy, which is most of a Thanksgiving plate missing. ๐Ÿฅ˜ the shallow pan of food is the closest general-purpose stand-in and it is doing a lot of work every November. ๐Ÿ  the roasted sweet potato is the one genuinely on-theme item people forget exists.

The full food set is in the food emoji category.

Friendsgiving

A different holiday wearing the same clothes, and it needs a different register. Friendsgiving is potluck, slightly chaotic and usually the weekend before, so the formal table sets read as wrong.

๐Ÿคท belongs in more of these than people put it in. The whole appeal of Friendsgiving is that nobody is pretending it is going to be perfect, and a set that admits that is funnier and more accurate than one built out of candles. Sets in the same spirit are collected on the friend group combos page.

Cooking, hour by hour

If you are posting stories through the day rather than sending one message:

  • Morning prep: ๐Ÿ”ช๐Ÿง…โ˜•
  • Bird in: ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ”ฅโฐ
  • Panic hour: ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฅต
  • Plating: ๐Ÿฝ๏ธโœจ๐ŸคŽ
  • Sitting down: ๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿงก
  • Washing up: ๐Ÿงฝ๐Ÿซง๐Ÿ˜ด

๐Ÿง… the onion is the most underused cooking emoji available. A frying pan could signal any meal at all, whereas an onion can only mean the tedious chopping stage, so it communicates real prep rather than a vague gesture at cooking. More food glyphs are on the food emoji page.

Leftovers

The most underrated part of the holiday and nobody makes sets for it.

๐Ÿฅช next to ๐Ÿฆƒ is the entire second day of Thanksgiving in two characters, which is the kind of thing emoji are actually good at.

Football and the afternoon

๐Ÿˆ is American football specifically. If you are messaging someone outside North America they will read it as a rugby ball or as nothing in particular, so it is worth knowing it does not travel.

Gratitude, without the clichรฉ

The part of the holiday people actually want words for, and where most emoji sets go badly wrong by piling on sparkles.

๐Ÿฅน Face Holding Back Tears is the most accurate gratitude emoji available and it arrived surprisingly late, in the 14.0 release in 2021. Before that the only options were ๐Ÿ™, which half the internet reads as praying rather than thanks, and ๐Ÿ˜Š, which is too mild for the sentiment. If you mean it, use the newer one.

When you cannot be there

Worth its own section, because this is the message most people struggle with.

Send ๐Ÿซ‚ or ๐Ÿค, and nothing else. Five festive emoji aimed at someone sitting the day out lands as relentless good cheer, which is the opposite of comfort. A single hug plus one sentence you wrote yourself beats any arrangement.

If you are the one on your own, ๐Ÿ‚โ˜•๐Ÿ“– is a perfectly good bio for the day and owes nobody an explanation.

The emoji this holiday is missing

Worth knowing before you go looking. Thanksgiving is unusually badly served by the emoji set for a holiday of its size.

There is no stuffing, no gravy, no cranberry sauce, no casserole, no roast potato and no carving knife that is not a kitchen knife. ๐Ÿฆƒ is a live turkey on most platforms rather than a cooked one, which is a strange thing to send about dinner once you notice it.

What you have instead: ๐Ÿฅง which is genuinely good, ๐ŸŒฝ and ๐Ÿ  which are on theme, ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ for the table, and ๐Ÿฅ˜ doing duty as every hot dish at once. Build from those and accept that the plate is mostly implied.

Compare that with Christmas, which has a tree, a Santa, a gift, a bell, a snowman and a bauble. The gap is mostly historical: the original Japanese emoji sets had no reason to encode an American holiday, and later additions came through proposals rather than a plan. There is more on how that pipeline works in the year-round emoji calendar.

Bio and caption sets

Three emoji for a bio, longer is fine in a caption.

These overlap heavily with general autumn sets, which is fine, and our autumn collection has a lot more of them if you want something that keeps working into December.

What to post against what to send

These are two different jobs and the same set rarely does both.

A post is broadcast. It can be longer, prettier and more decorative, because nobody receives it personally. Four or five emoji is fine, and the table and gratitude sets above suit it.

A message is addressed to one person, so it should be shorter and warmer. Two or three, and ideally something that acknowledges them rather than the holiday in general. ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฅง sent to fifteen people individually reads as a mail merge.

The honest version: if you are sending the same three emoji to everyone in your contacts, write one sentence instead. Our guide to captions by vibe and mood covers the broadcast side properly.

The colour rule, stated plainly

Thanksgiving sits in an awkward four-week gap between two much louder holidays, and most sets fail because they borrow from one of them.

  • Too much ๐Ÿงก and ๐ŸŽƒ energy and it reads as Halloween, still.
  • Any ๐ŸŽ„ โ„๏ธ or โœจ and it has jumped ahead to December.
  • ๐ŸคŽ ๐Ÿ‚ ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŒพ and ๐Ÿฅง are the ones that belong to this holiday and nothing else.

Brown and harvest gold are genuinely the Thanksgiving palette. If you take one thing from this page, lead with ๐ŸคŽ rather than ๐Ÿงก and everything else falls into place. The same logic applies across the season in the cozy autumn sets.

Sending it a day late, or early

A surprising amount of Thanksgiving messaging happens on the wrong day, and it is fine.

The day before is the busiest travel day of the year in the US, so ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ™„ or โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ lands well with anyone in transit and is more useful than a greeting they will get fifty of tomorrow.

The day after is Black Friday, which has no emoji of its own. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ covers it, and ๐Ÿฅช๐Ÿฆƒ covers the better version of the same day.

Sending on the day itself but hours late is completely normal, since most people are not looking at a phone during dinner. A message at 9pm reads as thoughtful rather than forgotten.

Turkey, and the problem with it

๐Ÿฆƒ carries this entire holiday and it is worth looking at properly.

Every major platform draws it as a live bird, usually standing, often with its tail fanned. None of them draw a cooked one. So the emoji most associated with a dinner is a picture of the animal before anything happened to it, which is quietly odd once you notice.

It also does other work. In the US it is a Thanksgiving marker and nothing else. Elsewhere it is simply a bird, and in some contexts it is an insult meaning someone foolish. If you are messaging outside North America, ๐Ÿฆƒ on its own will not read as a holiday greeting at all.

The fix is the same as everywhere else here: pin it to something that resolves the meaning. ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ is dinner. ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ is the season. ๐Ÿฆƒ alone is a bird.

One last thing about the palette, since it decides more than people expect. Thanksgiving has no visual signature of its own. Christmas owns red and green, Halloween owns orange and black, and this holiday sits between them with only brown to mark it out. Lead with the wrong colour and a reader files the set under whichever neighbour it resembles.

That is also why the leftover and travel sets tend to land better than the dinner ones. Everybody shares the day after and the drive home, while the meal itself varies enormously between families. A set that assumes less about the reader travels further, which is as true of emoji as it is of writing.

Which of these render everywhere

Almost all of them. Three notes:

  • ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฅง ๐ŸŒฝ ๐Ÿ‚ ๐Ÿ and ๐Ÿˆ are all from Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and will show up on anything.
  • ๐Ÿงˆ butter, ๐Ÿซ“ flatbread and ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿณ the gender-neutral cook are newer. The cook is a joiner sequence and splits into a person and a knife on very old software.
  • ๐Ÿฅน and ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ are 2021 additions, so a phone that has not updated in a few years shows a box. Our guide to the empty box explains why.

For sets built around the rest of the season, the Thanksgiving topic page has the full emoji list, the combos page has more arrangements, and the year-round emoji calendar covers what comes next once the leftovers are gone.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Thanksgiving in 2026?+

US Thanksgiving is 26 November 2026, the fourth Thursday of November. Canadian Thanksgiving is 12 October 2026, the second Monday of October. They are separate holidays six weeks apart.

What is the best Thanksgiving emoji combo?+

๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฅง covers bird, season and dessert in three characters and reads instantly. For something warmer and less literal, ๐Ÿ‚๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ works for the whole week rather than just the day.

Why do my Thanksgiving emoji look like Halloween?+

Because of the orange. ๐Ÿงก reads as Halloween and the two holidays are only four weeks apart. Swap it for ๐ŸคŽ, which reads as warm and earthy, and the set moves cleanly into November.

Is there a stuffing or gravy emoji?+

No, and there is no cranberry sauce or green bean casserole either, so most of a Thanksgiving plate has no emoji. ๐Ÿฅ˜ the shallow pan of food is the usual stand-in, and ๐Ÿ  the roasted sweet potato is the most on-theme item people forget exists.

What emoji should I send for gratitude?+

๐Ÿฅน Face Holding Back Tears, which arrived in the 14.0 release in 2021. It reads as genuinely moved where ๐Ÿ™ is ambiguous, since a lot of people read folded hands as praying rather than as thanks.

What do I send to someone spending Thanksgiving alone?+

๐Ÿซ‚ or ๐Ÿค and a sentence in your own words. A string of festive emoji sent to someone on their own reads as cheerful in a way that does not land. One hug beats anything decorative.
