Monospace is the whole game

Text art is drawn on a grid where every character occupies the same width. Paste it somewhere that uses a proportional font, which is almost every bio field and comment box, and the grid collapses: a narrow letter takes less room than a wide one and the picture skews. Discord fixes this if you wrap the art in a code block with three backticks. So does any terminal, most code editors, and Reddit if you indent by four spaces. Short faces survive anywhere because they are one line and have no grid to lose.

One-liners travel, pictures do not

The shrug, the lenny face and the table flip have outlived every platform they started on for a simple reason: they fit on one line, use no stacked characters and need no particular font. That is why they still work in a username, a tweet and a commit message. The larger multi-line pieces are a different proposition. They look superb in a terminal and in Discord code blocks, and they break more often than not anywhere else. Pick by where it is going, not by which one you like most.

How the 14 categories are split

Grouping by subject would put the shrug next to a cat, which helps nobody. These are grouped by what the art does instead: reaction faces you drop mid-conversation, decorative pieces that sit in a bio, animals, and the big set-piece drawings. The reaction categories are the ones worth bookmarking, since those are the pieces you reach for repeatedly. The large drawings are the ones to copy once for a specific post and not think about again.

Text art FAQ

Why does my text art look broken after pasting?

The destination is almost certainly using a proportional font, so the characters no longer line up in a grid. Wrap it in a Discord code block, indent it four spaces on Reddit, or choose a one-line piece instead.

What is the difference between text art and kaomoji?

Kaomoji are faces read upright, built from Japanese character sets, and they are always compact. Text art covers anything drawn with characters, including multi-line pictures. There is overlap at the small end, and the two live on separate pages here.

Will these work in an Instagram caption?

One-line faces will. Multi-line drawings will not hold their shape, because Instagram renders captions in a proportional font and also collapses some runs of spaces.

How much text art is here?

308 pieces across 14 categories, each one checked for whether it actually survives a copy and paste. Anything that only rendered correctly in one specific editor was left out.

Was ist Text-Art?
