ASCII Text Generator
Type a word and get it back as big letters drawn with ordinary keyboard characters, the banners you see at the top of code files, in terminal start screens and in Discord servers. Pick from 16 classic FIGlet fonts, copy the result as plain text or wrapped for Discord, and see exactly how many columns wide it is before you paste it somewhere narrow.
Up to 40 characters. Letters, numbers and basic punctuation; FIGlet fonts have no emoji or non-Latin letters, so those are left out.

The same word rendered by the generator in every font, with its size and the designer credited in the font file itself. Narrow fonts survive phone screens; the wide ones look best in a terminal or a README.

Why it falls apart when you paste it into Instagram or WhatsApp
ASCII lettering only lines up when every character is exactly as wide as every other one, which is what a monospaced font guarantees. Instagram captions, WhatsApp chats and most comment boxes use proportional fonts, where an i is thinner than an M, so the columns slide apart and the letters collapse. The fix is to paste it somewhere that switches to monospace: a Discord or Slack code block between three backticks, a WhatsApp message wrapped in three backticks, a Reddit code block, a terminal, or a code editor.
Choosing a font for where it will be pasted
Width matters more than looks. A phone shows roughly 35 to 45 monospaced columns before it wraps, and a wrapped banner is unreadable, so for chat apps pick Small, Mini, Small Slant or Digital and keep it to one short word. Standard and Slant are the classic code comment banners. ANSI Shadow draws with solid block characters (โ โ โ) and looks the most modern, but it needs a font that has those characters, which every terminal and code editor does. Larry 3D and Graffiti are showpieces for a README header where nothing will wrap.
Where FIGlet came from
FIGlet was written in 1991 by Glenn Chappell and Ian Chai, and the name is short for Frank, Ian and Glenn's letters, after the email signature that inspired it. A FIGlet font is a plain text file that spells out every character as a small block of other characters, which is why anyone could draw one and hundreds were shared. Most of the fonts here date from 1993 to 1996, and each still carries its designer's name in its header; we show that credit under every font in the gallery. The rendering on this page uses figlet.js, an open source JavaScript version of the original program.
Using it in code, terminals and READMEs
Put a banner inside a comment at the top of a file and it survives any editor, because code is always shown in monospace. For a command line tool, print it at start up; keep it under 80 columns so it fits a default terminal window. On GitHub, wrap it in a fenced code block in your README or the Markdown renderer will collapse the spaces. The download button saves a plain .txt file with no trailing spaces, which keeps version control diffs clean.

ASCII text questions
Why does my ASCII text look broken after I paste it?
The app you pasted into is using a proportional font, so the characters are different widths and the columns no longer line up. Paste it inside a code block (three backticks in Discord, Slack and WhatsApp) or into a terminal or code editor, where every character is the same width.
Can I use emoji or other alphabets?
No. FIGlet fonts only contain drawings for the basic Latin letters, digits and punctuation, plus accented Latin letters in some fonts. Emoji, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese and other scripts have no drawing, so the generator leaves them out.
How do I post it in Discord without it breaking?
Use the Copy for Discord button. It wraps the art in a code block (three backticks above and below), which Discord shows in a monospaced font. Keep it under about 40 columns or it will wrap on phones.
Can I use the result anywhere?
The text you make is yours to use. The fonts are free FIGlet fonts; their own notes ask that anyone who edits a font file adds their name to it, which does not affect using the output. We credit each font's designer in the gallery above.
Why is the output so wide?
Each letter is drawn several characters wide, so a ten letter word in a big font can pass 80 columns. Choose a narrow font such as Small, Mini or Digital, use a shorter word, or split the text over two lines.
