Emoji Shortcodes for Slack, Discord and GitHub

Type a colon, a name and another colon, and Slack, Discord or GitHub turns it into an emoji. The catch is that the three apps do not agree on the names. Below are 652 emoji with the code each platform expects; 99 of them need a different code on at least one platform, and 35 need three different codes. Every Slack and GitHub value was checked against that platform's own source on 17 October 2026.

What a shortcode is, and where typing one works

A shortcode is a plain text name for an emoji wrapped in colons, like :tada: for ๐ŸŽ‰. You type it, the app swaps it for the picture, and the message stores the real Unicode character. Slack, Discord and GitHub all do this in their message boxes, and GitHub also converts codes inside Markdown in issues, pull requests, comments and README files. Mattermost, Rocket.Chat, GitLab and forum software such as Discourse accept colon codes too. Outside those apps the colons stay as text: an email, a text message or a Word document will show :tada: exactly as you typed it.

The full shortcode table

Search by emoji, name or code. Tap any code to copy it. Highlighted rows are the ones where at least one platform uses a different name, so those are the ones worth reading carefully before you paste.

Discord column: Discord publishes no official shortcode list, so these values are unverified. They are the names in common use, so treat them as a best guess.

Why one emoji has three names

Nobody standardised the names. Unicode gives every emoji an official name, but those are long and often awkward to type, so each platform picked its own. Slack's names come from emoji-datasource, an open dataset started by Slack co-founder Cal Henderson, which tends to keep the long descriptive Unicode style. GitHub uses gemoji, its own open-source list, which favours short everyday words such as :tada: and :hugs:. Discord built yet another set. That is how one hugging face ends up as  on Slack, :hugging: on Discord and :hugs: on GitHub.

The mistakes people actually make

The most common one is the slight smile. ๐Ÿ™‚ is :slightly_smiling_face: on Slack and GitHub but  on Discord, so a habit formed in one app fails in the other. Thumbs up is :+1: in Slack's list and  in GitHub's, though both apps accept either spelling. Flags are a quiet trap: the United States flag is :flag-us: on Slack and :flag_us: on Discord, one hyphen apart, while GitHub uses the bare country code :us:, which Slack also accepts. And ๐Ÿคฃ shows how far apart the lists can drift: GitHub takes , while Slack's dataset only knows the full :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:. The worst cases are codes that work everywhere but mean different things, listed in the box above the table.

What we corrected on 17 October 2026

Our own table had 14 wrong values before this check: 12 on Slack and 2 on GitHub. They are listed here because the same wrong codes are still copied around on other sites.

How we checked this table

Every row was compared, by code point, against two published sources on 17 October 2026. For GitHub we used GitHub's own emoji API, which lists 1,936 names and the image each one renders. For Slack we used emoji-datasource version 16.0.0, the dataset Slack's picker is built on. A code counts as verified when the platform's source maps it to the same emoji. All 652 Slack codes and all 652 GitHub codes now pass; getting there meant fixing 14 that were wrong, including ๐Ÿคญ listed as , which is the name of ๐Ÿคซ. Many emoji accept more than one name (40 on Slack, 23 on GitHub), and for those we show one that works.

Discord is the column we cannot verify

Discord has never published its shortcode list. Its names live inside the app, can change between releases, and differ from both Slack and GitHub in small ways, such as :flag_us: with an underscore where Slack uses a hyphen. We kept the Discord column because people ask for it, but none of those 652 values has been checked against an official source, and we say so rather than mark them verified. If a Discord code fails, typing a colon and the first few letters opens Discord's own autocomplete, which matches the version you are running.

Emoji shortcode questions

Do emoji shortcodes work on WhatsApp, iMessage or Instagram?

No. Those apps do not convert colon codes, so  arrives as plain text. On phones you pick emoji from the keyboard instead. Some desktop keyboards and text expanders can replace codes for you, but that is your device doing it, not the app.

Why does a code work in Slack but not on Discord?

Each platform keeps its own name list. In our table 99 of 652 emoji need a different code on at least one of the three, so a code learned in Slack has a fair chance of failing elsewhere. Check the highlighted rows, or start typing and let the app's autocomplete finish it.

Do shortcodes work in GitHub README files and commit messages?

In README files, issues, pull requests, comments and wiki pages, yes: GitHub renders the code as an emoji when it displays the Markdown. In commit messages they show as emoji on github.com but stay as plain text in your terminal and most other git tools.

Can I make my own shortcodes?

On Slack and Discord, yes, if your workspace or server allows it. Both let permitted members upload a custom emoji image and give it a name. Those custom names only work inside that workspace or server, and they are not in this table.

Are the Discord codes on this page official?

No. Discord has no public list to check against, so the Discord column is unverified. The Slack and GitHub columns were checked against emoji-datasource 16.0.0 and GitHub's emoji API on 17 October 2026, and we fixed 14 wrong codes in the process.

Does the shortcode change the emoji my reader sees?
