What Does the 🤣 rolling on the floor laughing Emoji Mean?
A face tipped onto its side, eyes streaming, mouth wide open in helpless laughter. The tilt is doing the work: it reads as someone who has physically lost composure, a step beyond the upright crying laughing face. People use it for genuine collapse rather than polite amusement, which is the distinction most users intuitively observe even if they could not articulate it.

About rolling on the floor laughing Emoji
Usage: Group chats and comment sections run on it, usually repeated for emphasis rather than sent alone. It has substantially displaced the upright laughing face among younger users, who treat that one as dated. Among the youngest cohort even this has been pushed aside by the skull, which signals being killed by something funny.
Added in Unicode 9.0 in 2016, directly answering the dominance of the tears of joy face, which Oxford Dictionaries had named its word of the year in 2015. It is one of the clearest cases of the standard reacting to how people were already behaving rather than anticipating it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between this and the tears of joy face?
Degree. The upright face means something is funny; this one is sideways and means you have lost it completely. Many younger users now read the upright version as dated and reserve this for real laughter.
Why is the face rotated?
It depicts rolling on the floor laughing, so the tilt represents a body that has given up on staying upright. It is one of very few emoji where the rotation itself carries the meaning.
Has it been replaced by the skull emoji?
Partly, among younger users. The skull means dying of laughter and has taken over a lot of that ground, though this one remains far more widely understood across age groups.
