WhatsApp Bio Ideas and Character Counter

Your About line holds 139 characters, and it is read by people who already have your number. That changes what belongs in it. There is no audience to win over and no algorithm to feed, so the lines that work are the ones that answer a practical question: are you busy, when do you reply, what do you sell. Below are 64 of them, plus a counter that measures the field the way WhatsApp does rather than the way a text editor does.

Check it against the real 139

Paste a bio in. The bar tracks what WhatsApp spends, not what you can see, so compound emoji are counted honestly.

30 of 139 ยท 109 left

You can see 29 characters but this spends 30. Emoji and other characters outside the basic set cost two or more each. This is the usual reason a bio refuses to save.

64 About lines to copy

Each row shows its character count. They are all comfortably inside the limit so you have room to add a name, a city or a date without going over. Treat them as a starting point rather than a finished line.

Separators that work in the About field

Since the field will not hold a line break, a separator is how you fit two ideas into one line. These stay legible at the size WhatsApp renders a bio. The heavy decorative frames that suit a gaming name look cramped here, so one mark used once is the sensible maximum.

If a symbol keeps getting rejected somewhere else, the username symbol checker will tell you which field it is allowed in.

Fill in the blanks

Swap the bracketed parts for your own details. Each layout leaves enough headroom for a longer name or city than the example uses.

The 139 characters are not the ones you can see

Type a line into a word processor, get 134, paste it into WhatsApp and watch it refuse. This happens constantly and the explanation is unglamorous. Most emoji are stored as two units rather than one, so each one you add spends double. A flag is built from two regional indicator letters, which is four. A skin tone variant is a base emoji plus a modifier, also four.

Three emoji in a short bio can therefore cost you a whole word you wanted to keep. The counter at the top of this page tracks both numbers and tells you when they drift apart, which is the moment the field starts behaving in a way that feels broken but is not.

About and Status are two different things

People use the word status for both, which causes most of the confusion on this subject. About is the permanent line under your name, capped at 139 characters, visible to whoever your privacy settings allow. Status is the photo, video or text post that vanishes after 24 hours and sits in its own tab.

Everything on this page is for the About field. A long quote belongs in a Status, where it disappears on its own. Put it in About and it is still there in March, quietly describing a mood you were in last autumn.

Why a WhatsApp bio is not an Instagram bio

An Instagram bio is read by strangers deciding whether to follow you. A WhatsApp About is read by your sister, your landlord and a man who is going to deliver a sofa. They already know who you are. Nothing about you needs introducing.

That is why the useful lines here are logistical rather than aspirational. "Exams till 28th" does real work. "Living my best life" does none, and it is also the line several hundred thousand other profiles are already running. If you want the aspirational version, our Instagram bio page is the right field for it.

If you sell anything, write the hours

Small sellers run enormous amounts of business through WhatsApp, and the About line is free shelf space that most of them waste on a slogan. The four things worth 139 characters are opening hours, delivery days, how long you take to reply, and whether you want orders as a message or a call.

Each of those removes a message from your day. "Open 10 to 7, closed Sunday" answers a question you would otherwise type out forty times a week. A tagline answers nothing and still costs you the same characters.

Check who can see it before you write it

By default your About is visible to anyone holding your number, which includes people you have never saved and anyone who has your number from a group. Under Settings, Privacy, About you can narrow that to your contacts or hide it entirely.

This matters more than it sounds. A school name, a shift pattern, a neighbourhood or a travel date tells a stranger where you reliably are. If the line is any of those things, narrow the setting first and write the bio second.

Lines that are not worth the space

The default "Hey there! I am using WhatsApp" has been sitting on millions of profiles since 2009, which at least makes it honest. Beyond that, three habits waste the field. Quoting someone famous tells people about the quote rather than about you. Stacking six emoji with no words leaves the reader guessing. And a line about how busy you are, written by someone replying instantly, fools nobody.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many characters is the WhatsApp About field?

The About field holds 139 characters. That is the line under your name on your profile, and it stays until you change it. It is a different field from the 24 hour Status, which is far longer and disappears on its own.

Why will my bio not save when it looks short enough?

An emoji usually spends two of the 139 rather than one, and flags or skin tone variants spend four or more. So a line you measured at 135 visible characters can genuinely be over. The counter above shows both numbers and warns you when they disagree.

Can I add a line break to my WhatsApp About?

Not reliably. The About field is a single line in most app versions, and a return either submits the form or gets stripped on save. If you want two ideas in there, join them with a separator such as โ€ข or โœฆ instead of a break.

Who can see my WhatsApp bio?

By default anyone who has your number, including people not in your contacts. Settings, then Privacy, then About lets you narrow it to My contacts or Nobody. Worth checking before you put a workplace or a neighbourhood in there.

Does a WhatsApp bio help my business get found?

Not through search, because WhatsApp has no public directory for personal accounts. Its value is narrower and more practical: someone already looking at your profile learns your hours, your delivery days or when you reply, which saves both of you a message.

Do fancy fonts work in a WhatsApp bio?

Unicode letter styles paste in and display on most phones, but they cost more characters than plain text and screen readers announce them as gibberish. They also fail to render on older devices, where the person sees empty boxes instead of your name.
