What Does the ๐ folded hands Emoji Mean?
Two hands pressed together with fingers pointing up, sometimes with a faint glow behind them. Its meaning is genuinely contested. Many read it as prayer, many as the gesture of thanks and greeting used across South and Southeast Asia, and a sizeable group insists it is a high five. The original Japanese icon meant please or thank you, which supports the second reading more than the first.

About folded hands Emoji
Usage: Thanks and requests are its dominant use, often in messages where words alone would feel too brief. It appears in condolence posts, in sports threads hoping for a result, and in religious contexts across several faiths. The high five reading persists mostly as a joke about how ambiguous the artwork is.
It came through with the 2010 wave from Japanese carrier icons, where the gesture represented please or thank you rather than prayer specifically. The prayer reading developed in Western use after the emoji went international, which is why the two interpretations still sit uneasily together.

What does the folded hands emoji mean in different cultures?
In South and Southeast Asia the gesture is a greeting and a mark of respect, closer to namaste than to prayer. In much of the West it reads as prayer. Both uses are widespread.
