Every year someone announces that ๐ is finished, and every year it is still at the top. 2026 was no different: a crying-with-laughter face led the usage charts again, with ๐ continuing to take the same job among younger users rather than replacing it outright. The genuinely new story of the year was on the search side, where ๐ฅโค๏ธ became the most-looked-up combination, and the heart on fire โค๏ธโ๐ฅ kept climbing off the back of it. The combos here are built from the characters that actually did the work in 2026 rather than the ones trend pieces claimed were coming.
Laughter Keeps Winning, and Keeps Splitting
The interesting thing about laughter emoji is not that they dominate, it is that they fragment by age without anyone retiring. ๐ remains the global leader. ๐คฃ overtook it on several platforms years ago and held. ๐ means the same thing to anyone under about twenty-five, and ๐ญ has drifted almost entirely from grief into helpless laughter. Four characters, one meaning, and which you pick now says more about you than about the joke. Stacking them, as in ๐๐ญ๐, is a way of signalling the joke was funny enough to need all of them.
What Actually Changed This Year
Not the top of the chart. What moved was the pairing behaviour underneath it. ๐ฅโค๏ธ became the most-searched combination, which tells you people were actively looking for the right two-emoji response rather than defaulting to a single reaction. The heart set also finished filling out: pink, light blue and grey hearts arrived in 2023 and by 2026 were being chosen deliberately for tone rather than used as novelties. Grey in particular found a real job, standing in for muted or ambivalent affection that red could never carry.
