Meme Text Art, نسخ ولصق

Meme text art covers the reaction faces and layouts that internet culture turned into shorthand, typed rather than posted as images. The look of disapproval ಠ_ಠ and its monocled cousin ಠ_ರೃ, the Y U NO hands ლ(ಠ益ಠლ), the raised dongers ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ from Twitch chat, the kneeling orz from Japanese message boards and a stacked banknote for "take my money" replies all fit on one line. The multi-line pieces rebuild formats people know from images: a wall of disapproval, a scattered doge caption, the press F salute, a mug-in-hand "this is fine" and a three-step stick-figure dance. They land best as replies, where the format itself is the joke. Image-based characters such as trollface and the rage-comic faces are left out on purpose, for reasons covered further down.

ಠ is a letter, not a drawing

The eyes of ಠ_ಠ are U+0CA0 KANNADA LETTER TTHA, borrowed from the script used to write Kannada in southern India. Its rounded body with a dot inside happens to look like a glaring eye, and the face spread on English-language message boards in the late 2000s as the look of disapproval. ಠ_ರೃ swaps one eye for ರ (U+0CB0, RA) plus the vowel sign ೃ (U+0CC3), which a Kannada font tucks underneath like a monocle chain. Because the face depends on real script shaping, it can look slightly different from one font to the next.

The borrowed scripts behind dongers and orz

ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ is a tour of several writing systems. The ༼ ༽ brackets are Tibetan marks (U+0F3C and U+0F3D), the eyes are the Lao letter ຈ, and the mouth is the Arabic letter ل with a combining double breve, U+035C, beneath it. It became a Twitch and Reddit chant around 2014, usually paired with "raise your dongers". orz is older and simpler: three Latin letters that, read left to right, show the head, the arms on the floor and the folded legs of someone kneeling in defeat. It came out of Japanese boards in the early 2000s, where _| ̄|○ was the more literal version.

Why trollface and rage faces are missing

Plenty of meme formats are text from the start, and those are what this set reproduces. Trollface is different: it is one specific drawing, its artist reportedly registered a copyright on it, and licensing claims have followed its use since. Many rage-comic faces have similarly murky ownership, so this page keeps their captions, such as FFFFUUUU and the faux-French "le me" framing, and drops the faces. The same thinking applies to "this is fine", which comes from a 2013 web comic by KC Green: the piece here quotes the line over ASCII flames and does not redraw the comic's dog.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What does ಠ_ಠ mean?

It is the look of disapproval, a flat and unimpressed stare aimed at whatever came just before it in the thread. Send it after a terrible pun, a bad take or an obvious mistake. Stacked into a wall it reads as a whole crowd staring back, which pushes the reaction from mild to theatrical.

Where does press F to pay respects come from?

It comes from Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, a 2014 shooter in which a funeral scene prompts the player to press F. Players mocked the prompt as hollow, and typing F became a joking way to mark any loss, big or tiny. The block letter F in this set is the dramatic version.

How do I post the doge layout so the words stay scattered?

The scatter comes from leading spaces, which many apps trim or squeeze. Put it in a code block on Discord or Slack, or between triple backticks on WhatsApp, and the spacing holds. The format took off in 2013 around a photo of a Shiba Inu, and its broken grammar is the whole point.
