Skull Emojis, Copy & Paste

Most people use one skull emoji and never notice there are two. ๐Ÿ’€ is a bare skull, a Unicode 6.0 character from 2010, and it lives mostly in group chats as a reaction to something absurd. โ˜ ๏ธ adds the crossed bones and is far older: it entered Unicode 1.1 in 1993 as a printed dingbat, long before phones drew it in colour, and only gained emoji status in 2015. That age gap explains a lot about how each one behaves. ๐Ÿ’€ always arrives as a colourful picture, while โ˜  can still turn up as a flat black glyph. Around them sit โšฐ๏ธ coffin and โšฑ๏ธ funeral urn from Unicode 4.1 (2005), the hazard signs โ˜ข๏ธ and โ˜ฃ๏ธ from the same 1993 batch as โ˜ , and ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ, a black flag fused to โ˜  by a zero width joiner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an emoji of just the crossbones?

No. Unicode has no standalone crossed bones emoji. The closest is ๐Ÿฆด bone, added in Emoji 11.0 in 2018, and two of them side by side get the idea across. For the full danger symbol use โ˜ ๏ธ, which keeps the skull and the bones together in one character.

How is the pirate flag emoji made?

๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ is not a single character. It is ๐Ÿด waving black flag, an invisible zero width joiner, and โ˜ ๏ธ. Devices that know the sequence, which became standard in Emoji 11.0 in 2018, merge them into a Jolly Roger. Older ones show a black flag followed by a skull, which still reads as pirate.

Is it okay to send ๐Ÿ’€ to someone who is grieving?

Usually not. Among friends ๐Ÿ’€ nearly always means a joke hit hard, and that reading is the problem in a message about a death or an illness, where it can look like mockery. โšฑ๏ธ and โšฐ๏ธ are literal and can feel blunt too. For condolences, words with ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ dove or ๐Ÿค white heart are the safer choice.

๐Ÿ’€ or โ˜ ๏ธ: which one you meant

Pick ๐Ÿ’€ for tone and โ˜ ๏ธ for content. The plain skull has drifted almost entirely into humour, so a ๐Ÿ’€ after a story reads as a reaction to it, not a threat. The crossbones version still carries its old printed meaning of poison, lethal danger and piracy, which is why it shows up on posts about toxic plants, spicy food challenges, chemistry homework and true crime. Swapping them changes the message more than people expect. "This hot sauce โ˜ ๏ธ" warns your friends off. "This hot sauce ๐Ÿ’€" says it already defeated you.

Why โ˜  sometimes loses its colour

โ˜  was designed as a text symbol, so its default presentation is plain text. Emoji keyboards normally attach an invisible character, variation selector 16 (U+FE0F), that tells the receiving app to draw the colour version. Copy it from an old document, a font picker or a symbol chart and the selector is often missing, and you get a small monochrome skull that matches the surrounding letters. ๐Ÿ’€ has no text form at all, so it never has this problem. โ˜ข radioactive and โ˜ฃ biohazard behave exactly like โ˜ . If a pasted crossbones looks flat, pick it again from your phone's emoji keyboard.

From poison bottles to Mr. Yuk

The skull and crossbones marked poison bottles long before computers, and it is still the GHS pictogram for acute toxicity on chemical labels. It also had a known weakness. In 1971 the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh introduced Mr. Yuk, a scowling green face, and the usual explanation is that local children linked the skull to pirates and adventure rather than danger. The emoji inherited both readings. โ˜ ๏ธ on a post about cleaning products means keep away, while the same glyph beside ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ and ๐Ÿฆœ means a costume party.
