Unicode 15.0 Emojis

Three new hearts, a shaking face, and the goose that got away

What is Unicode 15.0?

Unicode 15.0 was published on 13 September 2022 with 20 new code points and 31 emoji once sequences are counted. It finally filled three gaps in the heart set that people had complained about for years: pink ๐Ÿฉท, light blue ๐Ÿฉต and grey ๐Ÿฉถ. The shaking face ๐Ÿซจ was the other standout, and the goose ๐Ÿชฟ arrived carrying a surprising amount of internet baggage.

The heart additions matter more than they look. Pink, light blue and grey had been among the most requested emoji for close to a decade, because the existing set forced people to use red or nothing.

When each platform shipped it

Unicode publishing a standard and your phone drawing the emoji are two separate events, usually months apart. These are the releases that added support.

The emoji that mattered in Unicode 15.0

  • ๐ŸซจShaking Face

Shock, disbelief, or being physically rattled. Animated on several platforms, which is rare.

  • ๐ŸฉทPink Heart

Requested for years. Softer and less romantic than the red heart, which is exactly why people wanted it.

  • ๐ŸฉตLight Blue Heart

Calm and platonic. Widely adopted for friendship where ๐Ÿ’™ felt too heavy.

  • ๐ŸฉถGrey Heart

Ambivalence, numbness, or muted affection. The most emotionally specific of the three.

  • ๐ŸชฟGoose

Arrived already loaded with meaning thanks to Untitled Goose Game and years of goose memes.

  • ๐ŸซŽMoose

Canada, wilderness, and the northern United States.

  • ๐ŸซDonkey

A working animal that had been conspicuously missing.

  • ๐ŸชผJellyfish

One of the better-drawn additions across most vendor sets.

  • ๐ŸซšGinger Root

Cooking and home remedies, and a favourite of food accounts.

  • ๐Ÿซ›Pea Pod

Completed a long-standing hole in the vegetable set.

  • ๐ŸชฝWing

A single wing, usable in pairs or alone for flight and freedom.

  • ๐ŸชปHyacinth

Spring and renewal, and one of the few purple flowers available.

  • ๐ŸซทLeftwards Pushing Hand

Designed to pair with ๐Ÿซธ for a high five or a blocking gesture.

  • ๐ŸซธRightwards Pushing Hand

The other half of the pair. Together they make a two-handed push.

  • ๐ŸชญFolding Hand Fan

Picked up quickly by ballroom and drag communities.

  • ๐ŸชฎHair Pick

A specific and overdue addition to the grooming set.

  • ๐Ÿช‡Maracas

    Percussion, celebration, Latin music.

  • ๐ŸชˆFlute

Drawn as a simple transverse flute across most platforms.

  • ๐ŸชฏKhanda

The symbol of Sikhism, added after a long-running proposal.

  • ๐Ÿ›œWireless

The Wi-Fi symbol, finally available as an emoji rather than a copied glyph.

Frequently Asked Questions

What new hearts were added in Unicode 15.0?

Three: pink ๐Ÿฉท, light blue ๐Ÿฉต and grey ๐Ÿฉถ. They had been among the most requested emoji for close to ten years, because the existing heart colours offered no soft, calm or neutral option.

What does the shaking face emoji mean?

๐Ÿซจ shows a face vibrating with motion lines. It reads as shock, disbelief or being rattled by news. Several platforms animate it, which makes it unusually expressive compared with static faces.

How many emoji did Unicode 15.0 add?

Twenty new code points, which becomes 31 once skin-tone and variant sequences are counted. Apple shipped them in iOS 16.4 in March 2023.
