What is Unicode 3.0?

Unicode 3.0 was published in 1999, the same year Shigetaka Kurita designed the original 176-emoji set for NTT DoCoMo's i-mode service in Japan. The two were unconnected at the time. A couple of characters from this version were later folded into emoji sets.
