What Does the ๐ new moon Emoji Mean?
A flat dark disc, the moon at the point in its cycle when the lit side faces entirely away from Earth and nothing is visible from the ground. Vendors draw it as a plain black or very dark grey circle. Beyond astronomy it has picked up a second life as a design element, valued precisely because it is the darkest round shape available.

About new moon Emoji
Usage: Lunar calendars and astrology accounts use it correctly, marking new moon dates for intention setting and ritual posts. Everyone else uses it as a dark dot: building moon phase sequences in bios, forming borders in aesthetic layouts, or standing in for a blacked-out square in minimal designs. Some use it for eclipses, which is astronomically wrong but visually reasonable.
Unicode 6.0 encoded the full set of eight lunar phases in 2010, from new moon through waning crescent, so a complete cycle can be written in sequence. That completeness is unusual and is why phase strings became a common bio decoration almost immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the new moon drawn completely dark?
Because that is what it looks like. At new moon the sunlit face points away from Earth, so nothing is lit from our view. It is also the only phase during which a solar eclipse can happen.
Are all eight moon phases available as emoji?
Yes, the full cycle was encoded together in 2010, which lets you write an entire lunar month in sequence. That is why phase strings turn up so often in bios and usernames.
Can I use it as a black circle?
People do constantly, though there is a dedicated black circle emoji that renders more consistently. The new moon is often slightly dark grey rather than true black on some platforms.
