What Does the ๐ซ people hugging Emoji Mean?
Two figures shown in silhouette with their arms around each other, drawn without faces or detail so that neither person is identifiable. That anonymity is the point. It represents the act of holding someone rather than any particular pair of people, which lets it stand for comfort, reunion, solidarity and grief without specifying who is involved or what the relationship is.

About people hugging Emoji
Usage: It is the standard response to bad news when words feel insufficient, and it carries none of the romantic weight a heart would add. People send it after a bereavement, a diagnosis or a hard day, and communities use it in posts of collective support. It also marks reunions, which is a much happier use of the same gesture.
Approved in Unicode 13.0 in 2020, a year in which physical contact became complicated for a very large number of people. Emojipedia noted the timing at the time, since the character was decided long before the circumstances that made it resonate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ๐ซ romantic?
No, and that is its main advantage. The figures are deliberately featureless, so it reads as comfort or solidarity between any two people without implying a relationship.
When should I send the people hugging emoji?
After bad news, during a difficult stretch, or on an anniversary of a loss. It communicates presence rather than advice, which is often what the moment calls for.
Why do the figures have no faces?
The design keeps them anonymous on purpose so the emoji represents the act of hugging rather than two specific people, which widens the situations it suits.
