⌜ Corner Bracket Symbols، نسخ ولصق

Corner bracket symbols frame text with just its corners and leave the sides open. The set starts with the four corners from Miscellaneous Technical, ⌜ ⌝ ⌞ ⌟, which logicians know as Quine corners, and the printer's crop marks ⌏ ⌎ ⌍ ⌌. It adds the half brackets ⸢ ⸣ ⸤ ⸥, the bracket pieces ⎡ ⎤ ⎣ ⎦ that stack into tall matrix brackets, the vertical forms ﹁ ﹂ ﹃ ﹄ of Japanese quotation marks, rounded arcs ◜ ◝ ◟ ◞, outlined triangles ◸ ◹ ◺ ◿ and heavy box corners ┏ ┓ ┗ ┛. People use them to put a title inside a viewfinder like ⌜ golden hour ⌟, to fake a speech bubble in a bio, or to mark one word in a caption without the weight of a full pair of brackets. The plain 「 」 are included as the horizontal reference for the vertical pairs, so you can compare them side by side.

Four families of corners and where each came from

⌜ ⌝ ⌞ ⌟ have been in Unicode since version 1.1 (1993). The philosopher W. V. Quine used corners like these for quasi-quotation, and logic textbooks still do. ⎡ ⎤ ⎣ ⎦ arrived in Unicode 3.2 (2002) as pieces of a bracket: a math renderer stacks an upper corner, extension pieces and a lower corner to draw one bracket around a matrix several lines tall. The half brackets ⸢ ⸣ ⸤ ⸥ came in Unicode 5.1 (2008), and scholars editing damaged ancient texts, notably cuneiform tablets, use them to flag partly broken signs. ﹁ ﹂ ﹃ ﹄ are compatibility forms of 「 」 『 』 turned for vertical Japanese and Chinese text, and NFKC normalization changes them straight back into the horizontal marks.

Making a viewfinder frame or a caption tag

The favourite trick is the camera viewfinder: put ⌜ before the first word and ⌟ after the last, as in ⌜ sunday market ⌟, so the text seems to sit inside a photo frame. Two lines make a fuller box, with ⌜ and ⌝ on the top line and ⌞ and ⌟ on the line below. ◜ ◝ and ◟ ◞ give the same layout rounded corners, which suits soft aesthetic bios. Heavy ┏ ┓ ┗ ┛ read like a printed label and line up best in a monospaced font, since they belong to the box drawing range. One catch: ⌜ is a narrow character while 「 is fullwidth, so mixing the two on one line leaves uneven gaps.

الأسئلة الشائعة

How are ⌜ ⌝ and 「 」 different?

They look alike but come from different blocks. ⌜ ⌝ ⌞ ⌟ are Miscellaneous Technical symbols with a narrow width, made for logic and technical notation. 「 」 are CJK punctuation, fullwidth, and they are the everyday quotation marks of Japanese. Pick 「 」 when you mean a quote in East Asian text and the thin corners when you only want a frame.

Why does ﹁ turn into 「 after I paste it somewhere?

﹁ ﹂ ﹃ ﹄ are presentation forms with a compatibility decomposition to 「 」 『 』. Any app or database that runs NFKC normalization on text, as some search tools and username systems do, will swap them for the horizontal brackets. If the vertical look matters, test the field with one character before you write a whole bio around it.

Can I build a tall bracket with ⎡ ⎤ ⎣ ⎦?

Yes, inside a monospaced block. Put ⎡ and ⎤ on the first line, the extension pieces ⎢ and ⎥ (U+23A2 and U+23A5) on the middle lines, and ⎣ and ⎦ on the last. Plain text math notes and code comments use this to draw a matrix. In a proportional font the pieces drift out of line, so a code block on Discord or GitHub works best.
