The empty rectangle people call tofu means the device received a valid character and had no drawing for it. The text is not corrupted and nothing was lost in the copy. The font simply does not cover that part of Unicode, and the gap is widest in the less-travelled blocks: alchemical symbols, obscure currency marks, older mathematical operators. Arrows, stars, card suits, mathematical basics and the common currency signs are covered almost everywhere, which is why the sets below lead with those.
An emoji is drawn in colour by the vendor and looks different on each platform. A text symbol inherits whatever font surrounds it, so it takes the colour and weight of your text and sits on the baseline properly. That makes symbols the better choice inside a sentence, a username or a heading, where a coloured emoji breaks the line. A handful of characters exist in both forms, and they can be forced one way or the other with a variation selector, which is why a star sometimes appears flat and sometimes glossy.

Block order is an accident of history: arrows are scattered across several, and currency signs sit nowhere near each other. Grouping by purpose means the set you open contains the alternatives you would actually consider, so comparing three arrow weights takes one screen instead of three searches.
The receiving font has no glyph for that character. The character itself is intact and will appear correctly on a device whose font covers it, so the fix is to pick a more widely supported alternative rather than to copy it again.
It depends on the platform rather than the character. Display names on Discord and Tumblr usually accept them. Account handles are typically restricted to letters, numbers and a little punctuation, so try it before building a brand around it.
The character is identical, but each system draws it with its own font, so weight and proportions shift slightly. That is different from emoji, where the artwork is redrawn entirely and can change the meaning.
