Unicode 13.0 Emojis

The anatomical heart, the smiling face with a tear, and a release that landed in a strange year

What is Unicode 13.0?

Unicode 13.0 was published on 10 March 2020, days before much of the world shut down. Fifty-five new code points became 117 emoji with sequences. The smiling face with tear ๐Ÿฅฒ turned out to be uncannily well timed, and the anatomical heart ๐Ÿซ€ and lungs ๐Ÿซ gave medical and health conversations proper characters for the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

When was the pinched fingers emoji added?

๐ŸคŒ arrived in Unicode 13.0, published on 10 March 2020. It is often credited to a later release because it took off on TikTok well after launch, but the character itself dates from the 2020 set.

What is the difference between ๐Ÿซ€ and โค๏ธ?

๐Ÿซ€ is an anatomical drawing of the human heart, intended for medicine, biology and health. โค๏ธ is the stylised symbol used for love and affection. The 2020 release added the organ specifically because the symbol could not carry a clinical meaning.

How many emoji did Unicode 13.0 add?

Fifty-five new code points, rising to 117 once gender and skin-tone sequences are counted. Apple shipped them in iOS 14.2 in November 2020.
