What Does the ๐ Goat Emoji Mean? GOAT, Explained
The ๐ goat emoji means GOAT, short for "Greatest Of All Time." Put it under a highlight clip, a friend's exam result or a perfect plate of nachos and you're saying that person or thing is the best there has ever been. It only means an actual goat when the topic is farms, petting zoos or the zodiac, and that is rarely hard to spot.
That's the quick answer. The full story is odder, because for most of the last century, calling an athlete a goat was an insult.
What a ๐ under a post is actually saying
One ๐ in a comment section is a vote. It says this person belongs at the top of the all-time list, not this week's list. That's why it piles up under career moments (a record broken, a final won, a retirement post) and much less under an ordinary good game.
Repetition turns up the volume. ๐๐๐ is loud agreement, and a reply made of ten goats is usually aimed at someone who doubted the player. Add a name and it becomes a claim people will fight about: "Messi ๐" is a position, not a compliment.
It escaped sport years ago. People call a teacher who extended a deadline the goat. A barista who remembers your order is the goat. So is a four dollar taco. In those cases it's affectionate exaggeration, the same move as calling someone a legend.
Where GOAT came from: Ali, Lonnie Ali and LL Cool J
Muhammad Ali spent his career telling anyone near a microphone that he was "the greatest." The acronym came later, from the business side of his life. In 1992 his wife, Lonnie Ali, incorporated a company called Greatest of All Time, Inc. (G.O.A.T. Inc.) to manage the retired boxer's intellectual property and licensing. Accounts differ on the legal form, and XXL describes it as an LLC, but the year and the purpose line up across sources.
LL Cool J carried the letters into hip hop with his 2000 album G.O.A.T., and rappers have been claiming the title for themselves ever since.
Dictionaries were slower. Merriam-Webster added GOAT in September 2018, as one of more than 840 new entries, and defined it as "the greatest of all time: the most accomplished and successful individual in the history of a particular sport or category of performance or activity." CBS News noted at the time that the entry's example sentence weighed Aaron Rodgers against Tom Brady. You'll find the uppercase spelling in the dictionary, but online most people just type the animal.
When being called a goat meant you blew it
Here's the part most explainers skip. In American sports writing, a lowercase goat was the player who failed at the worst possible moment: the dropped ball, the missed free throw, the error that lost a World Series. It's the scapegoat, shortened. New York cartoonist Bill Gallo drew World Series flops with horns.
So when GOAT started meaning the opposite, older fans had to recalibrate. Some never fully did, and you'll still occasionally see "he was the goat today" in a match report where it means the villain. If the sentence is about a single bad play rather than a career, read it the old way.
Emoji resolved most of the confusion. Nobody sends ๐ to mock a fumble. If the animal shows up, the meaning is almost always the flattering one.
How Brady, Messi and Biles made ๐ a fan ritual
The emoji's big moment has a measurable date. In January 2019 the Wall Street Journal, in reporting later republished by Sports Illustrated, counted roughly 40,000 tweets containing ๐ on a normal day. The day after Tom Brady's Super Bowl LI comeback in February 2017, when the Patriots recovered from 28 to 3 against Atlanta, that number hit 333,665, close to a 750% jump.
Athletes and brands leaned in. Brady's teammates brought live goats to his 40th birthday in 2017. In June 2018 Lionel Messi posed with real goats for a Paper magazine shoot, and adidas released its own goat images of him the same day. When Messi won his seventh Ballon d'Or in 2021, adidas lined up seven golden goat statues near the Eiffel Tower. Simone Biles went further and had a goat stitched in rhinestones onto her competition leotards.
Once the athletes themselves were wearing the joke, the emoji stopped being fan slang and became the standard way to crown someone in a reply.
The debates people settle with one emoji
Most ๐ traffic sits inside a few arguments that will never end. You don't have to pick a side to read them; you just need to know who is being compared and on what.
- Messi vs Ronaldo. Messi has eight Ballon d'Or awards and the 2022 World Cup; Cristiano Ronaldo has five Ballon d'Ors and a Euro 2016 title with Portugal. Fans post the goat next to one name, and the other side answers in kind.
- Jordan vs LeBron. Michael Jordan won six NBA titles and was Finals MVP in all six. LeBron James has four titles and passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the league's career scoring leader in 2023. The longevity camp and the perfect-record camp have been at it for over a decade.
- Brady. Seven Super Bowl wins, more than any franchise. Football's argument is less heated because the number is hard to dispute.
- Serena Williams. Twenty-three Grand Slam singles titles, the Open Era record. Tennis threads also bring in Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, and the men's debate is its own permanent war.
A tip if you're joining in: a ๐ with no name under a post about one player is a compliment. A ๐ next to a rival's name under that same post is a provocation, and people will treat it as one.
GOATed, goat tier, and the ironic goat
The acronym grew an adjective. GOATed (or goated) describes anything elite: a goated playlist, a goated sandwich, a goated pair of trainers. "Goat tier" does the same job in ranking videos and tier lists. Merriam-Webster now lists goated as a variant, with the lowercase spelling more common than the mixed-case one.
Then there's the joke version. Gen Z uses ๐ for small, absurd victories:
- "Parallel parked on the first try ๐"
- "Woke up before my alarm. I am the goat ๐"
- "Remembered my mum's birthday without a reminder ๐๐"
The irony is the point. Calling yourself the greatest of all time for replying to an email is funny exactly because it's ridiculous. If you're reading a message and unsure, check the stakes. Big achievement, sincere goat. Tiny achievement, self-mocking goat. It works the same way the skull does, which we unpack in our breakdown of ๐ and why it means laughing, and generation gaps in this kind of slang are covered in Gen Z vs millennial emoji meanings.
๐ vs ๐ vs ๐: picking the right animal
Three similar farm animals sit next to each other on the keyboard, and they are not interchangeable.
- ๐ goat is the GOAT. Sideways, with horns and a beard on most platforms.
- ๐ ewe is a woolly white sheep. It's the soft one: sleep, counting sheep, cosy vibes, sometimes "following the crowd."
- ๐ ram is the horned male, drawn with thick spiral horns. It stands in for Aries, the Los Angeles Rams, and headbutting stubbornness.
Their histories differ in a way that surprises people. All three characters entered Unicode at the same time, in Unicode 6.0 in 2010 (our Unicode versions index lists every release). But only ๐ came from the Japanese mobile carrier sets that started emoji, which is why Unicode's own emoji data files it as Emoji 0.6. The goat and the ram were added alongside it without a carrier origin, and the same data lists them as Emoji 1.0 (2015), the first release where Unicode formally declared which characters count as emoji.
If you mix them up, nobody will crown anyone. "Brady ๐" just reads as a sheep. For more look-alike pairs that trip people up, see emoji that look like duplicates and why they're not.
When ๐ really is just a goat
Literal goats still get plenty of use. Homesteaders, dairy farms and goat cheese makers post ๐ the way a bakery posts ๐ฅ. Goat yoga studios, where small goats wander across the mats during class, use it in nearly every caption. Kids' petting zoo trips, "the goats escaped again" family group chats, and pet goat accounts all count.
The calendar adds one more. Lunar New Year 2027 falls on Saturday, February 6, 2027, which is the first day of a Goat year in the Chinese zodiac. The Chinese character ็พ (yรกng) covers goat, sheep and ram, so you'll see all three emoji in greetings depending on who is posting. Expect ๐ and ๐ to swap freely next February, and see our Lunar New Year emoji collection for the rest of the set.
Context does the decoding. A goat next to hay, a barn ๐ก or a cheese board ๐ง is an animal. A goat next to a jersey number is a verdict.
What our own search data shows about ๐
We check what people type before they land on our pages. In our Google Search Console data for the last 16 months, the bare query "๐" (just the emoji, nothing else) earned 91 impressions at an average position of 9. People are pasting the goat straight into a search box because they saw it somewhere and want to know what it means.
Two more queries stood out: "emoji de goat" and "emoji de cabra goat." Those are Spanish speakers using the English word, because the slang travelled with football. Cabra is the Spanish for goat, but in a Messi thread the English acronym wins. Until this post, no page on our site actually answered them, which is why it exists.
Emoji-only searches are a real pattern rather than a quirk. Other single-glyph look-ups show up in the same reports, and we track the wider habit on our what-emoji-is-this page.

Emoji that travel with ๐
The goat rarely posts alone. These are the companions that change its tone:
- ๐ crown: royalty, used for the "king" framing. ๐๐ is the strongest version of the compliment.
- ๐ฅ fire: the performance was hot right now. ๐๐ฅ means great career and great night.
- ๐ฏ hundred points: agreement with someone else's claim. Reply "๐๐ฏ" to a fan who just named your player.
- ๐ trophy: the receipts. It points to titles rather than vibes.
- ๐ฅ first place medal: individual gold, popular for Olympians and track.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does ๐ mean in a text or comment?+
It almost always means GOAT, Greatest Of All Time. Sent under a post or after someone's achievement, it says they are the best ever at that thing. Sent about something tiny, like finishing laundry, it is usually a joke at the sender's own expense.
Who started calling people the GOAT?+
Muhammad Ali called himself the greatest, and in 1992 his wife Lonnie Ali incorporated Greatest of All Time, Inc. to manage his licensing. LL Cool J's 2000 album G.O.A.T. spread the acronym in music, and Merriam-Webster added it in September 2018.
Is calling someone a goat an insult?+
It used to be. Older American sports writing called the player who lost a game with one bad mistake the goat, short for scapegoat. Today GOAT is overwhelmingly praise, and the ๐ emoji is essentially never used in the old negative sense.
What is the difference between ๐, ๐ and ๐?+
๐ is the goat and the only one that means Greatest Of All Time. ๐ is a ewe, used for sheep, sleep and softness. ๐ is a ram with curled horns, used for Aries and the LA Rams. All three were encoded in Unicode 6.0 in 2010.
What does goated mean?+
Goated is the adjective form of GOAT and means elite or the best of its kind. A goated song, meal or player is one people rate at the very top. Merriam-Webster lists it as a variant, and the lowercase spelling is more common online than GOATed.
Will the goat emoji be popular for Lunar New Year 2027?+
Very likely. Lunar New Year falls on February 6, 2027 and starts the Year of the Goat. The Chinese zodiac animal ็พ can be read as goat, sheep or ram, so greetings will mix ๐, ๐ and ๐ freely.
