Melting Face Emoji ๐ซ Meaning, Read in Every Context
The ๐ซ melting face emoji means you are slowly dissolving: from embarrassment, from heat, from stress, or from a polite "I'm fine" that isn't true. The smile stays on while the face slides off the bottom of the frame, and that mismatch is the whole point. Which kind of melting someone means depends almost entirely on where they sent it, so this guide reads it context by context.
Unicode released it with Emoji 14.0 in September 2021, which makes it younger than most of the faces it gets compared with. It also became one of the few recent emoji to grow a reputation of its own, with awards to prove it. The dates and sources are further down.
The melting face emoji meaning, situation by situation
If you only need a quick decoder, this is the one we use. Each line is the most likely reading in that setting, not the only one.
- Work chat: "I am overwhelmed and accepting it." Often a reply to a new deadline or a fourth meeting invite.
- Group chat with friends: secondhand or firsthand cringe. Someone did something mortifying and is narrating it.
- Dating or flirting: either swooning ("you're making me melt") or wanting the floor to swallow you after an awkward message.
- Weather talk: literal. It is hot and the sender is turning into a puddle.
- After bad news: the smiling-through-it face. Sometimes a joke, sometimes a quiet signal worth noticing.
- After a compliment: flustered, shy, a little embarrassed in a good way.
Notice what's missing. ๐ซ almost never means plain happiness or plain anger. It lives in the gap between the expression you're showing and the state you're actually in.
Where ๐ซ came from: a 2019 proposal about two feelings at once
The emoji started as a Unicode proposal titled "Melting Face Proposal for Unicode 14.0", document L2/20-072. It lists three submitters, Neil Cohn, Jennifer Daniel and Erik Carter, and is dated December 10, 2019 with an update on February 21, 2020. Cohn is a researcher who studies the visual language of comics, Daniel chaired Unicode's emoji subcommittee, and Carter is the graphic designer who drew the sample image.
The proposal's core argument is unusually specific. It says the face "can convey two conflicting emotions simultaneously", and its examples read like a mood board for the next few years of the internet: "Everything is fine", "I'd like to not be here right now", "I'm not even trying to go outside in this weather", and "Just ate all the cookies in one sitting". It even listed "smiling depression" as a use.
Two small details are worth knowing. The authors suggested filing it among the skeptical, neutral faces. Unicode instead placed it in the face-smiling subgroup, where it still sits between ๐ and ๐ in the current emoji-test data. So officially, this is a smile. The proposal also framed it as one of six emoji meant to bring the "visual morphology" of Japanese comics into the emoji set, the same tradition that gave us sweat drops and anger veins.

A dated rollout timeline
Emoji go through a long gap between approval and showing up on your keyboard, and ๐ซ is a good case study. Here's the sequence, with the source for each step.
- December 10, 2019: proposal L2/20-072 dated, updated February 21, 2020 (unicode.org document register).
- September 14, 2021: Emoji 14.0 released, with ๐ซ alongside ๐ซก saluting face, ๐ซฅ dotted line face and ๐ฅน face holding back tears.
- September 2021: Google's design was featured on the front page of The New York Times before almost anyone could type it, as Emojipedia later noted.
- November 1, 2021: Emojipedia reported that Google had finalized its Emoji 14.0 artwork on the Noto Emoji GitHub page, with Android 12L and a later Android 12 update named as the route to phones.
- March 14, 2022: Apple shipped iOS 15.4, adding 123 new emoji designs including all 112 from Emoji 14.0. This is when most iPhone users first saw it.
- July 17, 2022: Emojipedia's World Emoji Awards named it Most 2022 Emoji, beating ๐ฅน in the final round. It placed third for Most Popular New Emoji.
- July 14, 2025: Emojipedia gave it a Lifetime Achievement Award, calling it the youngest winner ever. It had also won Most 2023 and Most 2024, and was retired from that bracket because it kept winning.
One caveat on Android. Google's rollout depended on the phone maker and the app, so there isn't one clean date the way there is for iOS. Apps that bundle their own emoji, like WhatsApp, also moved on their own schedules. Our explainer on why emojis look different on iPhone and Android covers why that happens.
Reading ๐ซ in a work Slack or Teams thread
At work, ๐ซ is the professional way to say "this is a lot" without saying it. It's rarely a complaint aimed at a person. It's aimed at the situation.
- "Client moved the launch up to Thursday ๐ซ "
- "Just found 340 unread emails from my week off ๐ซ "
- "The build broke again. On a Friday. At 5:40 ๐ซ "
Read it as resignation with a sense of humor still attached. If a colleague sends it in reply to a request you made, it doesn't mean no. It means yes, and also please notice what you've asked. A manager sending it to a team usually wants to signal "I know this is bad too", which lands better than a cheerful ๐.
The risk is in formal threads. In a message to a client or a senior stakeholder you don't know well, a melting face can read as unprofessional or as a hint that the work is slipping. We go into where that line sits in our guide to using emojis in business communication.
In the group chat: cringe, confession, and self-roasting
Friends use ๐ซ most often for embarrassment they're choosing to share. The face does the work of a blush and a wince at once.
- "I waved back at someone who was waving at the person behind me ๐ซ "
- "Accidentally liked her photo from 2019 ๐ซ ๐ซ "
- "Me reading my own tweets from college ๐ซ "
Stacking it two or three times turns the volume up. Pairing it with ๐ shifts the mood toward laughter, while ๐ซ on its own keeps a little more of the mortification. The embarrassed kaomoji set carries the same feeling in text-only form, if you're somewhere emoji don't render well.
There's also a cringe-awareness use that's a bit different. People send it after their own over-enthusiastic message, as if to say "I hear how that sounded." It's a pre-emptive apology for being too much, and it's one of the gentler things you can do in a fast-moving chat.
Dating and flirting: swoon or squirm?
This is where the melting face gets genuinely ambiguous. Melting has always been a romantic metaphor, so a ๐ซ after a compliment can mean "you're making me melt." It can also mean "I am deeply embarrassed by what I just typed."
- "you remembered my coffee order ๐ซ " (swoon)
- "ok that voice note was way too long, ignore me ๐ซ " (squirm)
- "stop being cute, I'm at work ๐ซ " (both)
Look at what comes before it. A compliment received points to swooning. Something the sender said or did points to embarrassment. If you can't tell, the reply that works either way is a warm one. The shy emoji combos are a good place to look if you'd rather answer in kind than in words.
Heatwaves, ice cream and the literal reading
Sometimes a melting face just means it's hot. The proposal itself listed summer as a use, and it's the one reading where nobody needs to decode anything.
- "41 degrees and the AC is broken ๐ซ "
- "Waiting for the bus in this sun โ๏ธ๐ซ "
- "Heat index says 'no' ๐ฅต๐ซ "
It pairs naturally with ๐ฅต hot face, which is red, sweating and openly suffering. The difference is attitude. ๐ฅต is complaining. ๐ซ has given up and become liquid. Our summer emoji page collects the rest of the sun, beach and heatwave set.
The sarcastic "I'm fine" and when to check in
The darkest reading is the one the proposal named outright: smiling while things fall apart. "Everything is fine ๐ซ " is a joke most of the time. It's the emoji version of the "this is fine" dog sitting in a burning room.
Most of the time is not all of the time, though. If someone who doesn't usually joke this way sends a string of melting faces after bad news, or attaches ๐ซ to something that sounds genuinely heavy, the smile is doing a lot of hiding. A short "you ok?" costs nothing. It's the kind of message where the emoji is softer than the feeling behind it.

How ๐ซ differs from ๐ฅฒ, ๐, ๐ , ๐ซจ, ๐ซก and ๐ตโ๐ซ
The melting face is constantly swapped with its neighbours, and each swap changes the message. Here's how we'd separate them, with the Emoji version each one arrived in.
- ๐ซ melting face (Emoji 14.0, 2021): slowly giving way under pressure, heat or embarrassment, still smiling.
- ๐ฅฒ smiling face with tear (Emoji 13.0, 2020): bittersweet. Grateful, proud or touched, but it hurts a little.
- ๐ upside-down face (Emoji 1.0, 2015): irony and passive aggression. It's sharper than ๐ซ and often aimed at someone. Our post on what the slightly smiling face really means covers its right-way-up sibling.
- ๐ grinning face with sweat (a Japanese carrier emoji that Unicode took in with version 6.0, 2010): nervous relief. A near miss, not a slow collapse.
- ๐ซจ shaking face (Emoji 15.0, 2022): a jolt. Shock, too much caffeine, the moment news lands. ๐ซ is the long aftermath.
- ๐ซก saluting face (Emoji 14.0, 2021): "understood, doing it." Same release as ๐ซ and often sent right after it: ๐ซ ๐ซก means overwhelmed but compliant.
- ๐ตโ๐ซ face with spiral eyes (Emoji 13.1, 2020): dizzy, overloaded, can't think straight. Mental scramble rather than melting.
The most useful contrast is with ๐. Both say "I'm smiling but I don't mean it", but ๐ carries an edge toward someone, while ๐ซ mostly turns the joke on yourself. If you want to be sarcastic without sounding annoyed, ๐ซ is the safer pick.
Our rundown of the newest faces in the face emojis from Unicode 15, 16 and 17 picks up where this release leaves off, and the new emojis page tracks what's shipping now. The 2026 Emoji 18.0 list even slots a new ๐ซซ cracking face directly after ๐ซ in Unicode's ordering, though few devices can draw it yet.
When the melting face backfires
Three situations where ๐ซ tends to go wrong, and none of them is about the emoji itself.
- Old devices. Anyone on software from before Emoji 14.0 support sees an empty box or a question mark instead of the face. On iPhone that means anything older than iOS 15.4. A blank box after "client moved the deadline" reads very differently.
- Genuinely serious news. Replying ๐ซ to someone's loss or diagnosis can look flippant, because the face is fundamentally comic. Words do better here.
- Readers who don't know it. Some people read the drooping shape as "sick" or "gross" rather than overwhelmed. With parents or older colleagues, a short line of text next to it removes the guesswork.
Our own habit is simple: if the message would still make sense with the emoji deleted, send it. If ๐ซ is carrying the entire meaning, add a few words.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does ๐ซ mean when a girl or guy sends it?+
It depends on what came just before it. After a compliment, it usually means flustered or swooning, as in you're making me melt. After their own awkward message, it means embarrassment. Gender doesn't change the meaning; the preceding message does.
When was the melting face emoji released?+
It was approved in Emoji 14.0, released by Unicode on September 14, 2021. iPhone users got it with iOS 15.4 on March 14, 2022. Android arrival varied by manufacturer and app, with Google's artwork finalized in November 2021.
Who created the melting face emoji?+
Unicode proposal L2/20-072 lists three submitters: comics researcher Neil Cohn, Jennifer Daniel, who chaired Unicode's emoji subcommittee, and graphic designer Erik Carter, who drew the sample image. The proposal was dated December 10, 2019 and updated in February 2020.
Is ๐ซ the same as ๐?+
No. Both mix a smile with a different feeling, but ๐ upside-down face reads as ironic or passive aggressive and is often aimed at someone. ๐ซ melting face is more self-directed: you are the one dissolving under heat, stress or embarrassment.
Why do I see a box instead of the melting face?+
Your device or app predates Emoji 14.0 support, so it has no artwork for the character. On iPhone, updating to iOS 15.4 or later fixes it. On Android, a system update or an app that bundles its own emoji set usually does.
Did the melting face emoji win any awards?+
Yes, though they are Emojipedia's awards rather than Unicode's. It won Most Anticipated in 2021, Most 2022 Emoji in July 2022, then Most 2023 and Most 2024, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award in July 2025.
