Every Emoji ZWJ Sequence, Taken Apart
๐ฉโ๐ป is not one character. It is ๐ฉ and ๐ป glued together by an invisible joiner, U+200D, and your phone draws the pair as a single picture. Unicode 18.0 lists 1,614 of these joined emoji, or 249 distinct designs once skin tones are set aside. Every one of them is below, split into its parts, with what an older device shows in its place and what it costs in bytes.

Why there are 1,614 and not 249
Unicode counts a man technologist with a medium skin tone as a different sequence from the one without, because the code points differ. Only 249 of the 1,614 are separate designs; the rest are the same drawings in other skin tones, and couples with two different tones multiply them fastest. 230 of the 249 designs depict people, which is why nearly every new ZWJ sequence still adds a person.
What an older phone shows instead
A device that has no drawing for a sequence simply ignores the joiner and draws each part, which is the 'Without support' column above. Unicode chooses the parts so that this still makes some sense: ๐ฉ ๐ป reads as a woman and a computer, ๐ป โ๏ธ as a bear and a snowflake. Families degrade the worst, into a line of four separate people. Nothing is lost in the message; once the reader's device updates, the same text shows the joined picture.
Which emoji sets are missing which sequences
On 19 October 2026 we requested all 249 designs from five artwork sets, after first confirming that each set still serves an ordinary emoji such as ๐. The results show how fast each set keeps up.

While checking Apple's images we found that our own image code requested the wrong file name for 140 of these designs, so the Apple picture never loaded on those emoji pages. Apple's files keep the invisible U+FE0F inside a ZWJ sequence, and we were removing it. That is now fixed.
Faces, hearts, animals, food and flags (17)
The smallest group, and the most inventive. Most of these make a new picture out of two old ones, such as fire on a bird for ๐ฆโ๐ฅ phoenix or a green square on a lemon for ๐โ๐ฉ lime, so the split version still hints at the meaning.

Facing right, and shaking heads (20)
Emoji 15.1 added a โก๏ธ to walkers, runners, kneelers and wheelchair users to turn them to face right, and a two-way arrow to ๐ to make a shaking head. In these, the extra part changes direction rather than adding an object.

Why one emoji counts as 15 characters
Programs count code units, not pictures. ๐จ๐ปโโค๏ธโ๐โ๐จ๐ป is one emoji on screen, but 10 code points, 35 bytes of UTF-8 and a JavaScript .length of 15. That breaks naive character limits, cuts sequences in half when text is truncated, and in an SMS sent as Unicode one family emoji uses up a large share of the 70-character segment. Count with a grapheme-aware method, such as Intl.Segmenter in JavaScript, and store text in utf8mb4 in MySQL.
Where the joiner itself is hiding
U+200D has no width and no picture, so you cannot see it, but it is there in every sequence above and you can delete it. Put the cursor after ๐ฉ in ๐ฉโ๐ป and press delete once, and many editors leave you with ๐ฉ and ๐ป side by side. How many ZWJ emoji are there?
Unicode 18.0 lists 1,614 recommended ZWJ sequences. Without skin tone variants that is 249 distinct designs, and 230 of those show people.
Why does my family emoji show as separate people?
The device or app you are reading on has no drawing for that combination, so it shows each person on their own. The message is intact. It will display as one family once that device gets an emoji update with that sequence.
Are skin tones joined with a ZWJ too?
No. A skin tone attaches directly to the person before it, with no joiner. In a couple, each person carries their own tone and the joiner sits between the people, which is how two different tones end up in one emoji.
What is the longest emoji?
Among recommended emoji, ๐จ๐ปโโค๏ธโ๐โ๐จ๐ป (kiss: man, man, light skin tone) is 10 code points and 35 bytes in UTF-8. In JavaScript its .length is 15, although it is a single picture on screen.
Do all apps support ZWJ emoji?
Most current phones and apps do, but support for the newest ones lags. In our check, Twemoji 14, which many websites still load, was missing 30 of the 249 designs, all of them added after it was released.
