Daily Emoji

There is one hidden emoji today and you have six guesses. Type any emoji's name, and the row that comes back tells you how close you are: whether it sits in the same group and subgroup of Unicode's emoji list, whether the answer arrived before or after it, and whether both take skin tones. Same answer for everyone, new one at midnight UTC.

How to play

  1. Type part of an emoji's name, such as cat or heart, and pick one from the list.
  2. Read the four clues on the row: green is a match, an arrow points to the answer's year, grey is a miss.
  3. Use them to narrow the field. Find the emoji within six guesses, then share your grid.

What the four clues mean

Group is one of the 8 top-level sections of Unicode's own emoji list, such as Animals & Nature. Subgroup is one of 95 narrower shelves inside them, with Unicode's own labels like face-smiling or animal-bird. Year is when the emoji arrived: a single character is dated by the Unicode version that encoded it, so โ˜บ๏ธ says 1993, and a joined sequence by the Emoji version that defined it, so โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ says 2020. Skin tones says whether the emoji accepts the five tone modifiers.

A strategy that usually finds it in four

Spend the first guess on the group, not on a hunch. Once a group goes green, aim for its biggest subgroups, because a matching subgroup leaves you with about 17 candidates on average. Use the year arrow to discard whole generations: an arrow up after a 2010 emoji rules out everything from the first big Unicode emoji release. Skin tones is the tiebreaker, since it only splits people and hands from everything else.

Where the answers come from

Answers are drawn from the 1,464 emoji that have a written page on this site, so the hidden emoji is always one with a meaning you can read about afterwards. Flags are left out, because they have their own game, and so is anything newer than Emoji 14.0, which some phones cannot display yet. The daily answer follows one fixed shuffle, so none repeats until every one has been used, a cycle of roughly four years.

Daily Emoji questions

How is Daily Emoji scored?

Solving it on the first guess scores 6, on the sixth guess 1, and missing it scores 0. Your share grid shows each guess as four squares or arrows in the order group, subgroup, year and skin tones, with no emoji in it, so it never spoils the answer.

Can I play more than once a day?

The daily puzzle is one per day, but after finishing it you can start practice rounds with a random hidden emoji. Practice games use the same rules and do not change your daily result.

Is it the same emoji for everyone?

Yes. The answer changes at 00:00 UTC for every player at once, so results you share and results your friends share are about the same emoji on the same day.

What does an arrow on the year mean?

An up arrow means the hidden emoji arrived later than your guess, and a down arrow means it arrived earlier. The year shown is your guess's year, so the arrow tells you which way to move next.
