Emojis That Look Different on iPhone, Android and Twitter
The emoji you send is not the picture your friend sees. Unicode only names each emoji, and every company draws its own. On 24 October 2026 we pulled every one of the 1,923 emoji in Unicode's list as drawn by Apple, by Google (the Noto set Android uses), by Twemoji, the set Twitter/X shows, and by OpenMoji, then measured how much each picture changes between them. These are the results, from the emoji that look like four different pictures to the ones that barely change.
How we measured it
Each image was scaled to 64 by 64 pixels and placed on a white background and then a black one. For every pair of sets we counted the pixels that visibly change (a colour difference above 96 out of 765, which ignores soft edges), on either background. An emoji's figure is the average over every pair of sets that draws it. 0% would be identical artwork; 100% would mean no pixel in common. One limit is worth knowing: a small emoji such as โซ๏ธ or ๐ leaves most of its square empty on every set, so it scores lower than a large drawing with the same amount of change.
Drawn by each set: Apple 1,900, Google 1,923, Twemoji 1,846, OpenMoji 1,923. Twemoji stops at Emoji 14.0 and Apple's set at 16.0, so their newest emoji are compared on the remaining sets.
The 20 emoji that change most between phones
Families are left out of this list and covered below, because they would fill it. What is left is mostly emoji with a background: fireworks drawn on a night sky by some sets and on nothing by others, and symbol tiles in a different colour on every phone.

Families: the biggest split on any emoji
All 30 family emoji score above 86%. Apple and Google now draw families as plain one-colour silhouettes with no faces, skin tone or hairstyle, while Twemoji and OpenMoji still draw coloured people with faces. So the same ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง arrives as a faceless outline on one phone and a smiling cartoon family on another.
Why the same emoji looks different on every phone
Unicode decides that an emoji exists, gives it a code and a name, and shows a sample image. Everything else is up to the company that draws the font: colour, angle, style, even whether a 'person' looks like a man or a woman. Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung each draw the whole set themselves, which is why the same code can show a different expression on each phone. When a set is redrawn, every message that already used the emoji changes with it.
Which emoji sets agree with each other
The typical difference for each pair of sets, across every emoji both of them draw:
| Sets compared | Typical difference |
|---|---|
| Apple / Google | 43.6% |
| Google / Twemoji | 44.1% |
| Google / OpenMoji | 47.9% |
| Apple / Twemoji | 48.0% |
| Apple / OpenMoji | 49.3% |
| Twemoji / OpenMoji | 56.0% |
Apple and Google are the closest pair, and Twemoji against OpenMoji the furthest apart. If you write on an iPhone for readers on Android, you are in the safest combination of the four.
Which set is the odd one out
For each emoji we checked whether one set differs from the other three clearly more than any other does (by at least 5 points). For 1,163 emoji no set stands out.

Which kinds of emoji vary most
| Category | Emoji | Typical difference | Odd one out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smileys and emotion | 172 | 48.1% | OpenMoji |
| People and body | 390 | 50.7% | OpenMoji |

| Objects | 268 | 49.5% | Twemoji |
| Symbols | 224 | 66.8% | OpenMoji |
| Flags | 270 | 37.4% | OpenMoji |
Symbols vary most (66.8%), because many are a glyph on a coloured tile and every company picks its own tile. Flags vary least (37.4%).
The 20 emoji that look the most alike everywhere
Flags are left out here too, since a flag is the same design on every set by definition. The rest are simple shapes: punctuation, small squares and pointing hands, which leave each company little room to be creative. Keep the small-emoji limit from the method above in mind when reading this one.

When the difference changes the meaning
Most differences are style. The ones that cause misunderstandings are the emoji where the expression or the object itself changes. The best known is the pistol ๐ซ, which Apple turned into a water gun in 2016 and the other big companies followed, so an old message reads differently today. Our measurement cannot tell style from meaning, which is why the tables show the artwork: look at the pictures, not only at the number, before deciding that an emoji is safe to send.
How to check what the other person will see
Every emoji page on this site shows the Apple, Google, Twemoji, Microsoft and OpenMoji designs side by side, so open the emoji before you send it to a group on mixed phones. If an emoji is newer than the other person's phone, they will not see a different design at all but an empty box, so check the emoji's version too.

Emoji platform differences questions
Which emoji looks the most different on iPhone and Android?
In our measurement on 24 October 2026, the family emoji differ most, all above 86%, because Apple and Google draw them as plain silhouettes. Outside families the top one is ๐ fireworks at 94.6%.
Do emoji look the same on iPhone and Android?
No, but Apple and Google are the closest pair of the four sets we measured, with a typical difference of 43.6% against 56.0% for the furthest pair. The meaning almost always survives; the look does not.
Why does my emoji look different when I send it?
Your phone sends a code, not a picture. The other person's phone draws that code with its own emoji font, so they see their company's design. Unless they are on the same system as you, the picture will differ.
Which emoji set is the most different from the others?
OpenMoji. It is the odd one out for 411 emoji, far more than Twemoji (227), Apple (87) or Google (35), because it uses a flat style with black outlines where the others use shading and gradients.
How did you measure the differences?
We downloaded each emoji from all four sets, scaled them to 64 by 64 pixels on white and on black, and counted the pixels that change between every pair of sets. The figure is the average across those pairs. The measurement was run on 24 October 2026.
