Thirty releases, and still half the grid missing
Turtle is the clearest example of an emoji that gets maintained without ever getting a build-out. It launched with 143 pairings, which was generous for 2020, then collected small batches for five years: four here, fifteen there, twenty in the most recent release. No single drop has beaten its opening day. Compare that with pizza, which arrived in October 2024 and got 551 pairings in one release. Google's attention clearly is not distributed by how long an emoji has been supported.
Where turtle works best
The shell is what makes turtle compose well. It gives the artwork a large flat surface that a partner emoji can sit on or pattern, which is why object and food pairings tend to read better here than face pairings do. Fire and sunglasses are the two most reliable starting points. If you are after something less obvious, the newest batch from February 2026 is the least-seen set and worth scrolling to.

Why does turtle have fewer combinations than newer emoji?
Longevity does not drive coverage. Turtle launched with 143 pairings in 2020 and has grown by small amounts across 30 releases. Pizza, added in late 2024, got 551 in its first release alone and overtook turtle immediately.
Which turtle mashups are newest?
The 2 February 2026 release added 20, and they appear in the newest pairings row above. Those are the ones least likely to have circulated already, which matters if you want something that does not look recycled.
Can I use turtle stickers outside Gboard?
Yes. Each sticker here downloads as a plain PNG, so it will go anywhere an image will: a message, a reaction, a document. Mixing emoji live is something Gboard does, but the file you get out is not tied to it.
